Thinkering Studio Project Proposal

Self-Taught Piano & Guitar Duet
Alexandra & Grace
Our main challenge will be learning how to play the chords/notes and, when we practice together, timing ourselves and being in sync. We are creating a duet of Grace playing the guitar and Alexandra playing the piano.
We expect to learn how to play songs on the guitar and piano and be in sync while doing it. We are making this because we think it will be really interesting to learn how to play these instruments. We will be challenged to memorize the notes/chords and learn how to play effectively.
This will stretch us because we have never done this before and will be learning new skills.
The materials we need are the keyboard and guitar from Mr. Whitmers classroom or Mr. Whitmer's sons guitar on most days, and a computer to watch tutorials.
Main Steps:
  1. Learn the basic notes
  2. Learn and practice how to string notes together and gain a basic understanding of our instruments.
  3. Learn more basic songs as practice.
  4. Find a song to learn.
  5. Practice the same song.
  6. Come together and try to become in sync
  7. Make a youtube video of us playing the final version
  • We will document by recording a video of us playing the song and post it on Youtube.
  • We are both learning different instruments and we will be watching different tutorials and we will come together at the end to play the song together.
  • We looked at the steps and saw that we needed to understand more about the instruments before we just learn how to play a song.
  • It will probably take us the whole 1st quarter to complete this project.
  • List possible resources/sources of inspiration to complete this project. Are there existing examples of the sort of project you want to complete? Has anyone else done a similar project in Thinkering Studio? What words did you search the wiki for when checking?
  1. guitar
  2. piano
  3. learning instruments
  • Who/what will be your "teacher"? (Outside expert, in class expert, book, video(s), website(s), Mr. Whitmer, experimenting, experience, etc.) Make sure your "teacher" is included in your steps.
  1. Youtube channels that post tutorials.
  2. Other students who have played these instruments and are willing to give us some of their time if we are stuck.
  • We will watch videos of other people playing and that will encourage us to learn for ourselves.
  • Learning the notes and keeping focused during the process may be difficult because we may get uninterested at times.
  • We will handle this by keeping focused and seeking help so we don't get stuck.
  • We will share by recording our music and posting the videos of us playing the music on YouTube, and our target audience is people our age that want to learn the guitar or piano.
When people are able to know what song we are playing by hearing us play it
If we can play the song with the correct notes and nic.e pacing, then we will be successful.
When they know/can hear what song we are playing

(Look at the Thinkering Studio Rubric for some ideas or possibly Rubistar.)
Design your own rubric.
“What are you making?” “Why are you making this?” and “Who is it for?”
We are making a piano and guitar duet. We are doing this because we think it would be interesting to learn new instruments. This is for people who are also interested in piano and/or guitar and want to understand the process.
