Top Projects:

  • Final Cut Pro Football Highlight Reel
    • This project was a continuation of the project from the 3rd quarter. We added a lot more clips and did a lot more editing this quarter. This quarter was more hands on editing and physically mixing the clips with music. Last quarter we mostly looked for the clips and were worrying about getting the project approved. We worked very hard this quarter and got a lot of quality edits done. We learned a tremendous amount of information and skills that we can definitely use in the future. Some strengths of our editing skills are importing the clips and music, syncing them together, and separating clips. Our weaknesses are adding effects like slow motion and color/lighting effects. We learned how to work past failures and problems. We had trouble uploading clips but we took the time to work through it and get back to work on our project.
  • Final Cut Pro Football Highlight
    • This project involves taking various football clips, combining them with music, and then editing them with the Final Cut Pro software to make a football highlight reel. We have already made a reel but this is the first time we are using the Final Cut Pro software to do it. We are hoping this will help give our final reel a true professional quality. We have no experience using this software so we anticipate learning quite a bit.We know we need some new strategies to accomplish this. One such approach is use the website Lynda.com to watch videos on how to use the Final Cut software. This is probably the best place to start. We also did a little extra research on the process which was very helpful. We obtained several ideas for polishing and finalizing the video. We hope to have several takeaways from this project that we can apply to future work. Some takeaways are the technical skills and knowledge we learn from using this software. I can foresee using Final Cut Pro in the future for many school projects.
  • Coding Project
    • This project is where we code on Code Combat and Code Academy. We started to work on this when the drone project kind of fell apart. For this project we experience a lot of trial and error, which forces us to try different strategies and see if they work. Some strategies I use are guess and check. Also, I frequently use other people in the class to help me on problems that I am having difficulty with.
  • Drone Project
    • This is the first project of my 8th grade year in Thinkering Studio. This project is a project that we bought a drone with a camera and are going to fly it outside of the school and make a video of it. This project challenges us because we have never operated something like this before and we have to learn the controls and repairs. Another challenge is that one of the propellers stopped working so we had to take the drone apart and try to figure out the problem. This happened at the end of the first quarter so we are still working on this problem. I like this project because it is very fun but we also have to solve a lot of problems and a lot of learning is to be done.
  • Making A Game
    • This was the only project all year that my group did not finish. We came into the project with very little knowledge on coding. It turned out that we needed a lot of coding experience with coding. We eventually decided to bail out of the project and start a different one.
  • Gamestar Mechanic Games
    • This was my first successful and finished project in this class. We worked very hard on this project and got a lot done. My partner had some experience on this project, but I had none. I had to start from scratch and earn all of the characters and objects during the project.
  • Led Throwies Project
    • This project we decided to make led lights with a magnet and battery attached to the throwie. We will throw them against a magnetic surface. They will stick to them. I chose this project because it is creative. It is also considered a form of art.
  • Football Turtorials Project
    • This project was really cool. We made tutorial videos on football techniques. This taught us how to film and make good videos. This was probably my favorite project I ever did in Thinkering Studio for the 6th Grade and school year.
  • Basketball Highlight Reel
    • This was the first project of my seventh grade year. For this project we are taking clips of NBA basketball highlights and putting them in IMovie while adding music and effects. This project is not yet completing because it takes a long time editing and putting the clips into IMovie. This project still has a lot of work to be done and we will have to work hard to finish it. This will challenge us to stay focused and get a lot of work done.
  • Shoe Selling Project
    • This a a project where we sell shoes that we already have on Ebay. We have not sold any shoes yet but we are planning on selling our Lebrons soon. We learned how to price the shoes correctly and take good photos. This was an important part because we want to make the most money we can when selling the shoes. A few of the challenges with this project are trying to take quality photos, pricing the shoes correctly, and trying to manage our sales. We learned a lot so far in this project since we started it.
  • Football Highlight Reel Project
    • This project has just begun. It is kind of like the second part of the Basketball Highlight Reel Project I did earlier in the year. Although, The sport I am focusing on is football. I am however, doing more and trying to make edits and effects the videos itself. This will make the project more interesting. I expect how to learn to make effects like slow motion, zooming in, and speeding up. This will stretch me because I have never done anything related to making effects. This project will be important to make me better at using IMovie and making interesting Highlight Reels.
  • Basketball Tutorials
    • We are in the middle of this project. It is where we make tutorials about the game of basketball. We have the ball handling part done so far. This project is good because we learn how to learn about good quality film techniques. Also, we learn how to make good edits and editing tips for iMovie. We also learn how to learn to use voice over in garage band. We learned a lot of these cool skills during the first part of this project. We expect to cover shooting and ball handling in our video.

Top Reflections:

  • "We learned a lot this week. We learned that there is a way we can mark points in the video to use for our clip. I think that this will help a lot and speed the process up. The strategy we used for this was using a resource who was Mr. Whitmer. This tool should help out our project a lot. It is one of the things we will learn while using Final Cut."
    • This was one of my better reflections of the quarter. It shows that I am always trying to use my resources and learn new things. We wanted to make our project better so we looked to Mr. Whitmer for advice. This tool was a little hard to learn and we are still not sure how to do it. The important thing about this reflection is using our resources as a strategy to learn new tools and skills.
  • "We were inefficient because we had trouble finding a virus free converter site. The strategy we used to find an alternative was to research trusted sites that would not give our computer a virus. We found one and started to convert the clips and the music into Final Cut Pro. We thought this would come quicker but we had to take extra time to find a trusted website."
    • I am reflecting on the above excerpt from my journal regarding this project. This comment reflects a critical part of the learning process for this project. It showed that when things went wrong, I persevered through it. I had to devise alternate solutions and strategies to accomplish the task at hand. I kept trying to find a site that would convert the videos without giving my computer a virus which would have been very detrimental. Due to this, our work plan became delayed. We kept adjusting and tweaking our plan, working through the class period and the week. Ultimately, the most successful strategy we used was researching and looking for trusted websites to access. It took some time but we finally found a great one and hopefully will continue to use it for the rest of the project. This was quite a challenge and definitely a great learning experience.
  • "This week, I learned how to start java script and code combat. I am doing this while we are waiting to fix our drone. I am on level 7 in Java Script. In Code combat, I am on the 5th or 6th level. I started the coding on Wednesday and continued it on Friday. I have already learned a lot during these two days and I will continue to do this while our drone is broken. The things I learned were, trying in basic java script and in code combat, moving my character and getting him to attack enemies. The strategies I used, were like a guess and check method. I kept trying different code and if it didn't work I would change it up. My strengths are moving the characters and my weakness is getting him to attack the enemies. When I was doing this i felt a little frustration when I got stuck on a level."
    • This was probably my best reflection this quarter because it was one of my first and better type two reflections. I really focused on making sure that I was fulfilling the requirements of a type two reflection. In this reflection I was just starting to use code combat and I was reflecting how it went, what I learned, and some strategies I used while doing it. The strategies I used really helped me complete the levels. Lastly, I also used some resources in the class, like Darryl.
  • "I helped Darryl a lot this week. He came back to the group this week, During class we just spent time teaching him how to fly the drone and set it up. I showed him the controls and also how to charge the drone after each time we use it. We were having trouble on Friday because one of the propellers on the quadcopter wasn't moving when we were trying to fly it. I learned on Friday ways to troubleshoot this problem."
    • This was a reflection towards the end of the first quarter when Darryl was rejoining the project. This reflection shows how I took the knowledge I had learned so far and taught him how to operate the drone and how to store it. We spent the whole week getting him caught up with my help. It really helped him and I taught him how to use the drone with no problem now.
  • "Today we watched some YouTube videos about the coding. We quickly learned that it seemed to hard to complete. So Jack and I are going to do a different project."
    • The explained that the making a game project is too hard and we will not be able to do it. Also it told that Jack and I were going to do a game star mechanic project. This was the ending of our first project.
  • " I finished my 10 Stages game. I made great progress. I am finished with my last level on game star."
    • This was the ending of my most recent game star project. Before I finished it I was running out of ideas so I had to work extra hard to finish the project. This showed that I worked really hard to finish the project.
  • "We had our proposal get approved by Mr.Whitmer. We think this will be a very good, fun, and challenging project."
    • This reflection showed that I was welcoming the challenge of a new project. I also said that it was going to be fun and enjoyable. I am welcoming the challenge and was looking forward to completing it.
  • "We learned how to adjust the music corresponding to the clips. This will make it look cooler and make it look more professional. It will make a video more fun to watch and better quality of work."
    • This reflection shows that we want to make our projects higher quality. This shows that we want our work to be the best and make it an enjoyable video for our audience. We want our highlight reel to reflect on our work ethic.
  • "We were efficient because we got straight to work. We worked very hard and efficiently. We took good quality pictures of the Lebrons and got them on the computer."
    • This reflection is good because it showed our group working very hard. This proves that we got a lot done. Also it proves that we used our time very well and focused all class period. This day is a model of how we should work every day going forward.
  • "I didn't get as far as I planned because the Mac I was going to use was not ready and I had to change plans a little bit. I had to just look for tips all day today. This set me back a bit but I learned cool tips for IMovie."
    • This reflection is one of my better ones because it shows that things didn't go as planned, but I adapted and still got a lot done in that class period. This taught me how to adapt to any situation and make the best of it. I got a lot done and I made an IMovie tips page on the wiki. I learned many tips from this to help me with my project.
  • "We learned how to record audio in garage band and then add it into IMovie. It took us the whole class to figure this out. We will use this skill for all of the videos later on in our project."
    • This reflection is good because it is a great example of problem solving. It showed us working all class period trying to figure out a problem. We eventually found out how to record the voice over and we worked very efficiently to work with the tie we had and get it one. We now have this skill to use for the rest of our project.

Top Critiques:**

  • "You might want to take out the audio of the announcers and add some music to it. This would make it more enjoyable to watch. Overall, I think the clips you put it were good."
    • I like this critique because it shows me trying to better their project. A strategy I use when doing critiques is giving the criticism first then complementing their project. This allow them to take the critiques better. This critique shows that I am sincerely trying to make their project better. This was one of my best critiques of the quarter.
  • "You could add some screenshots of your gameplay before you edit your video. This would help people see what your progress is like after each day. Also, you could make shorter screencasts so people have multiple videos to watch."
    • I think this critique is positive because it is an example of how the person can further improve their project. I offered a creative suggestion that they may not have thought of on their own. Often when one is very close to something that they are working on, they may hone in, hindered by a broader approach to the project. This is where alternate perspectives from others becomes beneficial. I also gave another helpful suggestion which was to make shorter screen casts so people have more videos to watch. The shorter videos are better because people often have shorter attention spans. Ultimately if the first suggestion didn't work for them, they have another solution or alternate recommendation from me. I hope these suggestions helped them and showed that I am taking the time to help make their project even better.
  • "I think that you should explain what the final product of this project should be. Is it going to be a YouTube video of gameplay? Screenshots? Or Something else?"
    • I like this critique because the person didn't specify how they are going to share their project. I offered two ways to try and guide them in the direction that will help out their project. This will help them make the project viewable for other people outside of the class. This shows me trying to make their project more enjoyable. Hopefully they share it in a way I told them.
  • "You might want to explain what the photo is about. Where and when it was taking. Also what you are taking a photo of. Lastly, you could explain the process of taking this photo and tell what you had to do to make it good."
    • I like this critique because it shows how I was giving them suggestions to make their project more understanding and more clear. I was telling them to explain each photo they took so the audience can understand the purpose behind each photo. I also said to say where and when each photo was taken so we could get a better picture of what they were trying to capture. This would make the project more enjoyable for us.
  • "I like your project overall. You might want to take videos of you building the house. Or you might want make a stop motion of the whole process of building the house. Also you might want to explain some challenges like what was the hardest part of the house to build."
    • This critique is one of my top ones because it showed me giving suggestions to make the project more enjoyable and viewable for others to see. This critique shows that I am trying to help make their project better and more interesting to other people viewing it. This was one of my better reflections this quarter.
  • "Your project is pretty good but you might want to tell the viewer where you are skiing and what run you are on. Also you might want to rate the runs based on their difficulty."
    • This critique is one of my better ones because it shows that I am trying to make the person's project better and giving them specific things to add or fix to their project. I told them exactly what I think would make their project better and more enjoyable for people to view and look at. This was also good because it helped me learn how to format my critiques by saying I like their project and then giving suggestions after. This critique showed that I could give a good critique and help the person and their project that I was giving it to.
  • "In your video you might want to use a microphone or something else to make the audio louder in your video. I found it hard to hear what you were saying in your video. This would help a lot."
    • This critique is good because it shows me giving a critique to help the person's project. I suggested something to make the project better. I think that the audio would make the project a lot better and more enjoyable to view. It helped their project to become better and get them a better grade.
  • "You might want to state what songs you are going to try to play. or if you are going to play songs. Also you might want to post a video of yourself playing a song on the guitar."
    • This critique is good because it shows me finding something that is missing from their project and suggesting something to make it better. It shows that I am taking the time to review their project and make a critique that would truly make it better. It would make it a to more enjoyable to view and it might help them get a better grade on it.
