Final Reflection…

Over the last 1 1/2 years in Thinkering… I have learned a lot about myself and other. First, I learned about my skills with accountability. I realized that sometimes I need to post a sticky note or write in my planner to remember the supplies that we need for my projects. Along with new techniques for being accountable I noticed that I am quite the perfectionist! Every reflection and Portfolio update I strive to make the absolute best, with as few flaws as possible. I am glad that I found that out! I also learned that I enjoy leading projects. Of course my partner and I had equal influence on it. But, I loved that feeling in me that told me that I was doing something to make us more like to succeed.

As I mentioned earlier, I learned about others. Everyone interacts differently with people. Over the 1 1/2 years I have always worked with Ellie B. That gave me a new perspective of collaboration. It is easier if you know them well. Sometimes we have had to help other groups. For example: helping Amelia clean the volcano, give Mia a pencil to work on, suggesting Jack with what to do for Spanish or even seeing how Zoe and Teresa sound. All the while, we working working hard on our own project. I like helping others with their project. I am really excited to conclude this 1 1/2 years of learning.

"What got in the way of your learning?"

What got in the way of my learning was M-Step testing. For the past 2 days I have been coming to Thinkering late because I have to finish the M-Step test. So, we didn't have a productive week. Ellie and I are prepared for the rubber. But, we might need some assistance doing it.
5-20-15
  • make photo DIY of pet toys.
  • make sock pet toys.

"I/We got further than I/we had planned because…"

We got further than we had planned because the fabric pet toys were easier to make than we thought. I showed resourcefulness by bringing in the materials on time. It think that this helped our success. I am guessing that the rubber will be more challenging.
5-13-15
  • categorize prototypes
  • upload photos

"Today I/we …"

Today we completed a lot. Yesterday we categorized all of our prototypes. That was useful because now we know what materials each will be made out of. We also uploaded all of our photos onto our wiki page for future reference. We are ready to start out toys.
5-6-15
  • start toys

"Why was this project meaningful to me/us…"

This project was meaningful to us because we get to passionately make pet toys for animals that we love. I really enjoy working hard on challenging toys and having the end product be a happy pet! I will get to apply this meaningful knowledge in the future by making more in my own time. Over the weekend I will need to upload the photos of our prototypes.
4-29-15
  • make prototypes for the toys
  • upload 2 pictures of bows
  • start making dog toys.

"What helped your learning?"

What helped our learning was making prototypes! So, now we know how to make all of our pet toys since its all planned out. These prototypes are excellent quality.
4-15-15
  • upload bow pictures
  • continue planning dog toys.

"One way I/we received feedback today was ... That feedback showed us that I/we …"

Ellie and I were having trouble deciding what dog toys we should make. So, one way that we received feedback was by taking a survey of the class. Once we had enough data, that feedback showed us that we were going to make a chewy out of rubber, a ball out of rubber, and a tug-toy out of fabric. That feedback challenged us to find a safe way to use rubber and to extend our knowledge with fabric.
4-1-15
  • start to finish bow making

"How do you know you learned it?"

Ellie and I learned a lot of creativity. Now, that our hair-bow project is coming to a close. We are now making pet-toys!!! I am so excited to do that. Ellie and I are now planning on what to bring and how to make our pet-toys. WE plan on emailing Mr. McLoud for the sock toys that Mr Whitmer told us about.
3-25-15
  • start taking pics of bow making

"Today I learned that failure leads to success."

I messed up a few times today with making this one bow. I kept trying again and again to make this pink and purple bow, so I decide to "copy" this one bow that Ellie made and it worked. It looks really good. I am taking them home today to. Once at home I will take pictures of failure-leads-to-success bows.
3-18-15
  • continue making bows

"In what ways do you think you could improve?"

Ellie and I are doing really well in making bows efficiently. But, there isn;t a lot of variety. And is it top quality? To improve I think we could analyze new techniques more, and "look before we leap". We could use the web links that we have on our proposal page.
1-4-15
  • construct video
  • plan out mini bows

"What got in the way of your learning?"

What got in the way of our learning was our obsession with bow making. We now want to stop the DIY project and sell the bows for a profit. We will make new bows for that. I don't think we will be able to sell them because it takes a lot of labor and we use top quality bows.
2-24-15
  • bring in hair bow supplies
  • plan out how to make hair bow
  • start video taping

"This week I/we had a breakthrough when …"

Instead of video taping on the floor like we did with the phone cases, we decided to video tape like we did with the Duct Tape projects. Our video was so much better this time! We will continue to do this.

  • Upload video

"One frustration I/we had was …"

One frustration we had was that the file that we uploaded was too big! So, we had to re-upload it! And since it takes about ten minutes to load it was really frustrating waiting for it to load, twice! We ended up doing the small size. I hope the video works.
2/4/15
  • compete video for phone cases

"What did you learn about your topic/tool?"

We learned about our topic/tool was that you can fast forward in IMovie. I am still working on my technology skills. So this fast forward and slow-mo device really helped us make the video perfect.
1/28/15
  • construct video for phone cases
  • Upload video if finished

"My/our achievement was affected by ... This caused …"

Our achievement was affected by finding the right clips to put into our video. Since we made so many it was a haste to go through them all. This caused an idea to spark in my head: I think we should label our videos better so we save time.
1/14/15
  • Finish Proposal
  • Start Phone Cases

"Today I/We…"

Finished our proposal and started the videos. We achieved a lot. I think we could have put a little bit more effort into them both though.

  • choose new project.

One frustration I/we had was ...

Not being able to decide what to put into our proposal. We each had our own ideas and we wanted to put them in. Another thing that frustrated me was that I didn't know that we had to do effort and achievement, so from now on I will do it.
12/17/14

  • continue adding glue gems as sprinkles

I/We got further than I/we had planned because...

We were able to finish our blob art project! Now each of us will be able to take a present home for Christmas. We definitely went further than we planned. I really enjoyed this project and finishing it. Both canvases look really good. I can't wait to choose a new project.
12/10/14
  • add crayon shard paper onto canvas
  • decorate
  • take pics
  • try to finish be next week

What breakthrough(s) did you have?

We had a major breakthrough! Which was making gems with hot glue. They look like smooth crystals! this is how it happened: We accidentally got glue on the table and peeled it off, it looked really good. then we decided to drip glue in hand sanitize. Those made great quality gems to decorate our canvas.
12/2/14
  • finish blob art
  • try mixing new colors
  • continue taking pictures each day

One way we might solve this problem ...

One problem that we had was taking good pictures with both of us in it, because my Macbook camera has a timer on it and only does "selfie" style. One way we solved this problem is that we are going to use iPods to take better pictures. Then we can easily upload them and they will look better and great quality.
11/19/14
  • continue blob art canvas until end
  • choose new project
x

"My/Our next step will be.."

To try blending the colors more. We made a mistake by blending the colors, but there are no mistakes in art. So, we decided to blend the colors. It looked great. We will search up the artist: Jackson Polluc, for suggestions on what to do next.
11/12/14
  • finish uploading pictures
  • Edit captions
  • Continue blob art canvas

"What was fun?"

I thought taking pictures of our work was super fun. Some people think that documenting is boring. But, now we are up to date with pictures and we are going to try to upload at least 3 pictures each day. Also, I think mixing colors on the actual canvas aaas fun, it gave us a sense of professionalism and fun of course.
11/5/14
  • upload final pictures
  • keep working on canvas
x
x
"One way we might solve this problem …"

We solved two problems that we has: organization and turn taking. One way we solved that problem is that we made a three station, one for melting on the canvas, one for creating and tinkering with the crayons and the last one for technology and other. This helped us because now we don't have to wait for each other to finish with the blow dryer, everything works better.
10/29/14
  • invent tactics to spread wax
  • continue uploading pictures of rainbow

"Where could I/we use the skills/knowledge again?"

We could use the skills and knowledge again in building and engineering. Because if you can be creative and come up with your own ways to build you have a head-start in many future hubs. Creativity is key, you need to be able to use your own brain.
10/22/14
  • make new cow design crayon canvas
  • upload pictures of rainbow

"Today we learned from our failure by…"

We had many failures today in tactics for moving the crayon. But, in the end we found out that if not steadied, the crayon will roll all over. So, we are going to stick to using scissors no the stick.
10/16/14
  • finish the rainbow canvas
  • start that dark colored crayon canvas
x
x
"I/We were effective/ineffective because …"

Today we invented a new type of crayon melting art, you melt a small part of a crayon and that you smear it around. We also got very far in our first crayon melting canvas, we have about 3 inches to do left. Even had time to start the new design, when we finch our first design we will continue the next one.
10/8/14
  • Start Melting Crayons - AKA start at the reds and pinks
  • document progress
x
x
"What got in the way of our learning is..."

That it takes a long time for the crayon to melt. But, we did get really far We are on melting the light greens and yellows. I think we are making very quick progress and we are getting used to the speed of the melting.
10/1/14
  • plan out project
  • do first steps of crayon melting
  • learn new methods
x

"We were having difficulty with…"

Glueing the last crayons on. There was a lot of extra space which made us brainstorm new ways of how to fit on more crayons. Otherwise, we were very successful with starting the canvas. I burned myself this time, badly, I have to remember how to deal with that.
9/23/14
  • complete proposal
  • research and start project

"To describe our progress towards our goal…"

I say we have achieved a lot in planning our project out. We have creatively made a mini ideas book to remember our ideas better. We still have a little bit to do in our proposal but we will have that done by next week or sooner.
9/17/14
  • complete proposal
  • possibly research project
x
x
We ended up having to complete the proposal at home. But we did research the project.
If we had a do over I think we should have stopped thinking over our ideas to much and just getting to the proposal.
6/2/14
We are planning to upload the pictures that we took of the hallway and possibly upload them and add captions. If we are able to then we will download the app Photoshop.
x
x
"What did you learn that you can apply to future projects?"

We learned that experimenting with technology can help you understand it. We were experimenting with the app that we got called "Effects for Photos" and now we know what we are going for with the photos that we edit. We can put this to future projects because this phrase says it all "Curiosity kills the cat, but knowledge brought it back.", we were demonstrating it by not knowing haw to work this app, then we tested out how it works and now we know more. We understand the app now.
5/19/14
For monday we are going to upload the remaining photos and on tuesday we are hopefully going to add captions to them and if we finish then take more pics
x
x
"This is a lot like …"

future decision making because we have to decide what to take a photo of and compromise with which lens to use. This week we worked efficiently, we got some captions done and we both agreed to do more and we finished in time to take more pictures. And now we have planned to take photos of the hall way life but still add and edit the fish pics.
5/12/14
I am going to learn hoe to upload pictures off of my camera by watching videos or just ask my dad at home. lastly: take more photos.
x
x
"What got in the way of your learning?"

What got in the way of our learning was the fact that our computer was slow, so it took a long time to upload 5 of the photos. Luckily, since we worked together we found how to upload the photos and with your help we found how to put in the SD card. Another thing that got in the way was choosing which pics to put in: Ellie and I kept disagreeing on which pics to choose but in the end we reached consensus and chose.
5/5/14
Finish proposal

"What helped your learning?"

The idea of finding out knowledge for ourselves helped us knowing that we, on our own can learn, too. I was trying to see which camera mode would fit taking photos of fish through glass the best. My plan is to upload the good examples and bad ones to the wiki.
4/21/14
Upload all missing videos and decide new project
x
x
"Why was this project meaningful to me/us?"

Our duct taping project was meaningful to us because I learned how to duct tape with more confidence because I shared what I learned with others so that they can be pro duct tapers, too. Also, I will always remember how we made the duct tape crafts because my whole family and Ellie loved them. AS an update of how we did so far: I think the wiki is okay so at home I am going to make It neater. Because we worked so efficiently Ellie finished her photography proposal and I am almost done with mine.

"What did you learn about your topic/tool?"

I learned a lot of helpful info. about iMovie! At first I wasn't very good with this tool but then with the help of teamwork and perseverance we created great project. When you told us to document our mistakes in duct taping and and filming we decided to make a bloopers video using iMovie.

The steps we did first were more mess-up videos because it was on accident and we didn't know what to say and we didn't always agree on what to say. I will upload the photos at home because of my busy schedule. We completed a lot and finished our bow.

"Where could I/we use the skills/knowledge again?"

This week we actually got a lot done - we persevered and finished everything, we actually started our Blooper's video. We will have to use the skill efficiency again. We need to use it so we can get a lot done and do good work quickly.

We were effective because we moved quickly throughout the project.
But, I still need help uploading the new video, i will get it from Youtube. I realized that working in a team is hard because you have to rely on your teammates in order to do your own work.

What patterns did you experience/see?
I noticed that making a project is more difficult than it looks. My
partner and I found that we had to synthesize with our differences and ideas.
In order to upload our video and get through the tech trouble.

Today I learned that failure leads to success.
We messed up a few times, but it ended up making it better.
Duct taping requires learning skills and patience. For me because sometimes I have some trouble with the duct tape sticking to each other, I have to be more careful about that.
